ليس لأنه أشهر كتاب عن القهوة فحسب، بل لأنه من أكثر الكتب شمولًا وموثوقية في تتبع رحلة هذه الحبة الصغيرة التي غيّرت وجه العالم.
يبدأ المؤلف من الجذور الأولى للقهوة، مستعرضًا الروايات المختلفة عن اكتشافها في مرتفعات الحبشة، ثم ينتقل إلى اليمن، حيث تحولت القهوة من نبات بري إلى مشروب، ومنها انطلقت عبر موانئ المخا إلى العالم. لا يكتفي بسرد الأحداث، بل يربط بين الجغرافيا والدين والتجارة والسياسة، ليُظهر كيف أصبحت القهوة جزءًا من الحياة اليومية في مكة والقاهرة وإسطنبول، قبل أن تصل إلى أوروبا فتُحدث ثورة ثقافية حقيقية.
ومن أجمل أفكار الكتاب أن المؤلف لا يعتبر القهوة مجرد شراب، بل يراها قوة تاريخية. فالمقاهي لم تكن أماكن للترفيه فقط، بل كانت منتديات تُناقش فيها الأفكار، وتُعقد فيها الصفقات، وتُقرأ فيها الصحف، وتولد منها مشاريع اقتصادية وحركات فكرية. حتى إن بعض المؤرخين أطلقوا على المقاهي الأوروبية اسم “جامعات العامة” لما كان يدور فيها من نقاشات ومعارف.
ثم ينتقل الكتاب إلى الجانب الاقتصادي، فيكشف كيف تحولت القهوة إلى واحدة من أكبر السلع المتداولة في العالم، وكيف تنافست الدول الاستعمارية على زراعتها والسيطرة على تجارتها، وكيف نشأت إمبراطوريات اقتصادية وشركات عالمية بفضل هذا المنتج.
ولا يغفل المؤلف الجانب الإنساني؛ إذ يناقش ظروف المزارعين، وتقلبات أسعار البن، وتأثير التجارة العالمية على المجتمعات التي تعتمد عليه، فيمنح القارئ صورة متوازنة لا تقتصر على النكهة والرائحة، بل تمتد إلى الإنسان الذي يزرع ويحصد ويعيش من هذه الشجرة.
ما يميز الكتاب أيضًا أنه يجمع بين الأسلوب الأدبي الممتع والدقة التاريخية، فتشعر أنك تقرأ رواية مشوقة، بينما أنت في الحقيقة تتنقل بين قرون من التاريخ والاقتصاد والسياسة والثقافة.
وأكثر ما أعجبني في فكرته الأساسية هو أنه يثبت أن التاريخ لا تصنعه الحروب والملوك وحدهم، بل قد تصنعه أيضًا حبة بن. فكم من قرار سياسي نوقش في مقهى، وكم من فكرة فلسفية وُلدت على فنجان قهوة، وكم من ثروة بُنيت على تجارة بدأت من ميناء المخا في اليمن.
إنه كتاب يجعلك تنظر إلى فنجان القهوة الذي بين يديك بطريقة مختلفة؛ فلا تراه مجرد مشروب يوقظك صباحًا، بل خلاصة رحلة امتدت مئات السنين، وعبرت الجبال والبحار، وربطت بين الشعوب، وأسهمت في تشكيل جانب من تاريخ العالم.

Not only because it is the most famous book about coffee, but because it is one of the most comprehensive and reliable books in tracing the journey of this little grain that changed the face of the world.
The author starts from the first roots of coffee, reviewing the various narratives of its discovery in the heights of Abyssinia, and then moves to Yemen, where coffee turned from a wild plant to a drink, and from there it started through the ports of Mokha to the world. It is not content with narrating events, but also links geography, religion, trade and politics, to show how coffee became part of daily life in Mecca, Cairo and Istanbul, before it reached Europe and caused a real cultural revolution.
One of the most beautiful ideas of the book is that the author does not consider coffee just a drink, but sees it as a historical force. Cafes were not only places of entertainment, but forums where ideas were discussed, deals were held, newspapers were read, and economic projects and intellectual movements were generated. Some historians have even called European cafes “public universities” because of their discussions and knowledge.
The book then moves to the economic aspect, revealing how coffee became one of the largest commodities in circulation in the world, how the colonial countries competed for its cultivation and control of their trade, and how economic empires and international companies arose thanks to this product.
The author does not overlook the human aspect; as he discusses the conditions of farmers, the fluctuations of coffee prices, and the impact of world trade on the societies that depend on it, giving the reader a balanced image that is not limited to flavor and smell, but extends to the human being who grows, harvests and lives from this tree.

What I liked most about his basic idea is that he proves that history is not only made by wars and kings, but may also be made by Ben’s grain. How many political decisions were discussed in a cafe, how many philosophical ideas were born on a cup of coffee, and how much wealth was built on a trade that started from the port of Mokha in Yemen.
It is a book that makes you look at the cup of coffee in your hands in a different way; not just a drink that wakes you up in the morning, but the summary of a journey that lasted hundreds of years, crossed mountains and seas, connected peoples, and contributed to the formation of an aspect of world history.
