Efficiency between spouses is not a match, but the ability to build a common life
Choosing a life partner is one of the most impactful decisions in human life; marriage is not a passing emotional encounter, but a long partnership that extends to the details of daily life, raising children, managing responsibilities, and facing pressures and crises. Hence the importance of efficiency between spouses as one of the factors that help build a more stable and reassuring family.
What is meant by efficiency is not that the couple is identical in everything, the perfect match is unrealistic, and the success of the marriage is not required to be equal in character, inclinations, interests, specialization and cultural level. Rather, the intention is to have an appropriate degree of convergence in substantive matters, with the ability to understand, adapt to and manage the difference maturely.
Studies indicate that couples may show a clear convergence in some aspects, including religiosity and some values and orientations, while similarity is less in other aspects such as personality and emotions; Therefore, the success of marriage cannot be reduced in the amount of similarity alone.
Faith and moral competence:
Values, religion and ethics are at the forefront of aspects that should be paid attention to when choosing a life partner; because they are not related to passing behavior, but affect the human view of the family, rights and duties, raising children, money, social relations, and the way of dealing with the dispute.
The Noble Qur’an says:
﴿The good for the good and the good for the good﴾.
The honorable hadith came to emphasize religion and creation when choosing. Religion is not meant by mere manifestations, but rather that religiosity turns into honesty, honesty, mercy, respect for rights, good coedenstence and responsibility.
The importance of this aspect is consistent with what was found in scientific reviews of the factors of long-term marriage stability, where religious and value agreement, along with commitment, respect, communication and tolerance, emerged among the factors associated with the stability of the marital relationship.
Psychological efficiency and emotional maturity:
Two people may converge in age, education and social environment, but they differ greatly in the degree of psychological maturity. Here are more important questions than just the apparent similarity:
Can each party control its anger? Does he accept an apology? Can he dialogue without insult or threat? Does he take responsibility? And can he separate the problem from the person he disagrees with?
Psychological maturity does not mean not being angry or sad, but it means the ability to manage emotions without turning into harm to the other party.
Recent literature supports the importance of emotional maturity in adapting to differences and pressures of marital roles, and effective communication and emotional maturity are associated with better levels of marital satisfaction.
Intellectual and cultural competence:
It is not required that the couple hold the same testimony or agree on every intellectual issue, but it is important that the distance between them is not wide to the extent that it makes dialogue difficult or generates a permanent sense of superiority or belittion.
The most important thing about the culture is to respect the other’s mind; the couple may differ in opinion and remain in great harmony between them, while they may agree on many ideas and the marriage fails due to superiority, stubbbornness and lack of respect for difference.
Proficiency in the outlook on life:
One of the most important things to discuss before marriage is looking to the future: What is the meaning of family for each party? How do they look at childbearing and child-rearing? What is their attitude towards the wife’s work? And how is the money managed? What are the limits of the intervention of the two families? What are the financial and social priorities?
Some of the marital differences that emerge years later did not begin after marriage, but existed from the beginning in the form of fundamental differences that were not clearly discussed.
Some research suggests that similarity in values and life goals may be positively associated with relationship satisfaction, although the effect of similarity alone is limited and does not explain the success of the entire marriage.
Communication is more important than matching:
The couple may disagree, but they have the skill of dialogue, so they succeed. They may be very similar, but they do not know how to deal at the first dispute, so the relationship falters.
So the question before marriage should not only be:
How similar are we?
But also:
How will we deal when we disagree?
Studies have found that communication is an important element in the relationship between convergence of values and the quality of married life.
A successful marriage does not need two people who are not different, but two people who know how to disagree without losing each other.
Efficiency is not a search for a complete human being:
It is a common mistake to turn the concept of efficiency into a long list of conditions in search of a husband or wife without a shortage. The perfect man does not exist, and every person who enters marriage with him aspects of strength and aspects that need to grow.
Therefore, a distinction should be made between the acceptable difference and the fundamental difference. The difference in hobbies, tastes and some character can be adapted to it, but the deep difference in core values, lack of respect, lack of responsibility, or the continuous inability to dialogue, may be more influential in the future of the relationship.
Golden Message:
Marital efficiency is not to look for a copy of myself, but to look for a person with whom I can build a life.
It is a combination of convergence in religion, values and ethics, psychosocial maturity, the ability to take responsibility, acceptable closeness in the outlook on life, and most important of all: respect, communication, adaptability, mutual concession and wise resolution of differences.
A stable marriage is not based on the absence of difference, but on its good management; it does not need the correspondence of two people, but on the consensus of two hearts and two minds that know how to maintain affection when opinions differ, and how to make difference a space for integration, not a cause of conflict.
