A message to the Jewish lobby in Washington on the anniversary of the October War victories and the liberation of the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula, correcting historical misconceptions about October for future generations… From:
Dr. Nadia Helmy, the Egyptian expert on Chinese political affairs
To the members of the Jewish lobby and American Jewish organizations in Washington
Today, I have decided to address you as a well-known Egyptian academic, specializing for many years in Jewish and Israeli studies in China. This is due to the insistence of American religious freedom organizations and all Jewish lobby organizations in Washington to keep me updated on their daily news, and your strong desire for me to be kept fully informed of all developments concerning religious freedom practices worldwide. I have observed your conflation of religious and political issues, along with your downplaying of the victory achieved by my countrymen in October 1973.
The only certainty is that I was invited only once, within the heart of the American Embassy in Cairo, to celebrate with you and share in the day of the signing of the Camp David Peace Accords between the late Egyptian President “Anwar Sadat”, the hero of war and peace, and your side, along with a number of Egyptian figures loyal to you. This was due to your determination to convince me to be part of the defenders of global peace values from your narrow and limited perspective. This has been a point of contention between us for years, especially given your continued fallacies regarding the belittling of the October victory, which was achieved and through which we Egyptians, together with you, opened the doors to the peace that followed the war.
Therefore, I have decided today to address all American Jewish organizations and the heads of American Jewish lobbying groups, to remind you of the right of future generations who want to live in peace and are determined to achieve it. As the Egyptian academic you have been trying for years to make part of your intellectual, academic, and research project, despite my deep pride in my intellectual independence in confronting you and everyone else, regardless of the temptations I receive from you every day. Here is the text of my message to you:
On the anniversary of the October 6, 1973 victories and the liberation of the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula, we address you with this message not only to commemorate an event that changed the course of history in the Middle East, but also to offer a realistic perspective and correct persistent historical misconceptions passed down to future generations. Reading history with a truthful eye is the first and most essential step toward building any sustainable future based on justice and the recognition of rights. This is achieved by drawing your attention to the following:
– First: The victory achieved by the Egyptian army in October 1973 was not merely a fleeting military campaign, but rather conclusive proof that the will of the people to reclaim their occupied land cannot be broken by illusions of military superiority or by fortifications once described as invincible, such as the Bar-Lev Line. Attempts to portray the war’s outcome to your younger generations as a “flawed victory” or a “tactical adjustment” are a grave misconception. The war fully achieved its strategic and political objectives, forcing Israel to abandon its “security for expansion” doctrine and accept the principle of “land for peace”. This ultimately led to Israel’s complete and unconditional withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula, down to the last inch of Taba.
– Secondly, it is crucial that future generations understand that the peace the region has enjoyed for decades was not a gift or a concession, but rather the product of the strength and dignity Egypt regained on the battlefield. The October War proved that stability is not achieved by imposing a fait accompli or occupying others’ lands, but by recognizing the rights of peoples and their national sovereignty. Instilling in new generations misconceptions based on denying the military and political realities of 1973 will only perpetuate intellectual isolation and prevent them from learning the lessons of the past.
– Third: Employing political and economic influence in major capitals, especially Washington, to distort historical facts or justify hegemonic policies is no longer effective in a world where truths are rapidly unfolding. Younger generations today, both within the United States and globally, are more adept at distinguishing between biased narratives and the realities on the ground. Therefore, your moral responsibility compels you to present your children with an honest account that acknowledges that a comprehensive and just peace is the only option, and that clinging to occupied land only breeds instability.
In conclusion, the memory of October serves as a constant reminder of Egypt’s strength and resolve in defending its land and sovereignty. Simultaneously, it is a profound historical lesson: rights do not expire with time, and military might cannot guarantee security in the absence of justice. Thus, we hope this anniversary will provide an opportunity to re-examine distorted narratives and to instill in your future generations the values of respecting the sovereignty of nations and the rights of peoples, as the only path to achieving genuine coexistence in the region. We all extend our hands in peace and insist upon it always as the only way out of all the crises and tensions we are experiencing together. My regards.
